Her actions caused three Forsaken to fall, and she failed to successfully use Isam as a tool. She screams as Shaidar Haran reaches for her. In the wolf dream, Perrin finds Boundless, whom Hopper told him would explain the answer. Boundless is Noam, the man who was caged when he became too much of a wolf. Perrin asks Boundless what he thinks of the world of men, and Boundless sends images of his painful life as Noam. Perrin realizes that Noam willingly chose the simpler life of a wolf. With this, Perrin reaches full understanding of himself, feeling secure in the knowledge that he can choose to exist side-by-side with his wolf self. Olver plans to ask the Aelfinn how to find the Shaido who killed his parents. Olver notices the letter from Verin and opens it. Unable to understand it, he shows it to Talmanes. The letter says that an enormous force of Shadowspawn will come through a Waygate in Caemlyn. Talmanes sees a red glow over Caemlyn and realizes that the invasion has already begun. He orders his men to keep the dragons out of the Shadow's hands. Olver takes out the knife that he stole, intending to join the fight. Kandor has fallen, and an injured merchant heads toward Arafel. He encounters veiled men and thinks that he has been rescued by the Aiel, but the veils are red, and one of the men takes down his veil to reveal teeth filed to points. The man takes out his knife to kill the merchant. In a normal dream Rand contemplates tomorrow's plans. Though he should have complete control over his own dream, he hears a scream in the distance. The dream disappears and he walks through a wooden corridor, then opens a wooden door made of roots. In a bowl-shaped room, the darkness seems to leech life out of him. A fallen candle illuminates the black marble floor in the middle, and Rand finds a silvery-haired woman weeping. He does not recognize her, but realizes by looking into her eyes that she is Mierin. She speaks of a man who is holding her captive, torturing and nearly killing her every night before Healing her just enough to keep her alive. She turns in fear, feeling that he is coming, calling him "the Shadow in every man's mind, the murderer of truth." He feels a mix of emotions at seeing Mierin, who once called herself Selene, who became known as Lanfear. Lan and his men have reached Tarwin's Gap. Though they are vastly outnumbered by the Trollocs on the other side, Lan announces himself and leads the charge against them. A Prophecy of the Shadow says that the Dark One will reach out his hand and take what is his. On that day, it says that the One-Eyed Fool will travel the halls of mourning, the First Among Vermin will lift his hand to bring freedom to Him who will Destroy, and the last days of the Fallen Blacksmith's pride will come. It says that the Broken Wolf, whom Death has known, will fall and be consumed by the Midnight Towers, and his destruction will shake the will of men. ← Previous Chapter Next Chapter →
