Lan sees evidence of Agelmar's betrayal and relieves him of duty, putting him under guard. Agelmar admits that there is something wrong with him, saying that thoughts of sabotage have been replacing his true plans. Lan prevents him from taking his own life, suspecting Compulsion. As they retreat, Tenobia's force is overrun.

Mat joins the fray after finding that Bryne has made a mess of things. His medallion saves him from a Sharan channeler, who is taken captive. Mat concludes that Bryne is a Darkfriend, says that he needs command of the Seanchan army, and Min needs to go warn Egwene. Fortuona agrees to it. Since Mat captured the channeler, she is made his damane, and since he dropped one of his nails at an officer's feet, Mat unwittingly raised him to the Blood. He is assigned as Mat's personal retainer.
