Gawyn tries to use the Bloodknife rings to kill Demandred but is mortally wounded. Before he dies, he tells Galad that Rand is Galad's half-brother. Min is shocked to see Siuan away from Bryne, because she knows her viewing has not yet been fulfilled. Siuan helps save Mat from an attack on his command tent, and is killed. Bryne dies charging the enemy after Siuan's death. Since Nynaeve can't channel while Rand controls the circle, she uses traditional healing methods to save Alanna's life. Androl uses the Mask of Mirrors to steal the seals back from M'Hael. Aravine takes the Horn of Valere and reveals that she is a Darkfriend who tried to turn back to the Light but was taken back by Darkfriends. Vanin and Harnan tell Faile that they were not trying to steal the Horn, but were only trying to recover Mat's tabac, which they thought Faile was leaving behind. They help her get the Horn back. Faile gives Olver the Horn and fools her pursuers into thinking she still has it, so Olver can take the Horn to Mat. Olver tries to escape on Bela, but she is killed. Olver hides in a crevice too small for the Trollocs that are chasing him. Mellar's disguised mercenaries attack Birgitte and Elayne. Mellar kills Birgitte, sends a horse with a corpse that looks like Elayne to fool her army into thinking she is dead, and prepares to cut Elayne's children out to be taken to the Dark One. Mat fakes an argument with Fortuona and she takes all her forces back to Seanchan, hoping to fool the Shadow into thinking Fortuona has abandoned Mat. However, Tuon is also considering abandoning him in truth. After Min sees a viewing of a chain over Yulan's head, she realizes that Yulan has been enthralled by a spy and is being made to try to convince Fortuona to abandon Mat. Min uses her viewings to see that a soh'jin woman is the channeler among them. The woman escapes through a gateway. This convinces Fortuona not to abandon Mat, and she makes preparations to return to Merrilor. After Gawyn's death, Egwene bonds Leilwin and takes Vora's sa'angreal. She leads the Aes Sedai in the long battle against the Sharan channelers. She learns that the seals were recovered. M'Hael's balefire brings some Sharan channelers back from the dead, and Egwene considers using balefire herself to reverse this, but instead realizes a new weave, the opposite of balefire. M'Hael releases balefire again, but Egwene hits the balefire with her new weave. She feels that the damage to the Pattern is being stabilized by this. She names her new weave The Flame of Tar Valon. She draws too much of the Power, forcing her weave forward until it pierces through M'Hael's hand and chest, which kills him by crystallizing him. She tells Leilwin to watch for the light, and break the seals when she sees it. She sends Leilwin away by gateway and releases the bond, then uses Vora's sa'angreal to draw an immense amount of the Power to repair the damage to the Pattern in the area, and dies doing so. Vora's sa'angreal is trapped within the crystal column where Egwene died. Mat sends Galad a medallion against channeling, which allows Galad to face Demandred. Galad loses his arm in the battle and is left for dead. Annoura burns herself out to bring him back to Berelain, who realizes that Galad wants the medallion sent back to Mat, so Berelain takes it and departs. Rand and the Dark One show each other visions of possible futures, some where the Dark One was victorious, some where Rand destroyed the Dark One. Rand realizes that the Dark One needs to continue to exist so people will continue to have the freedom of choice. Rand sees the deaths of many of his friends and allies in the Last Battle. When he is about to give in to despair, he hears his father's voice telling him to let go. Lan makes a solitary charge in order to duel with Demandred. Lan allows Demandred's sword to stab his side so he can stab Demandred through the throat. Lan collapses. ← Previous Chapter Next Chapter →
