Galad questions Byar's insistence that Perrin summoned the Trollocs when he sees Perrin's army attacking the monsters. Galad's army is inexperienced and does not fare well against the Trollocs. Perrin's hammer seems to burn the Trollocs. Perrin convinces his army to ride down to aid the Whitecloaks. Perrin's charge drives back the Trollocs. Perrin jumps down from his horse and helps Galad into the saddle. Galad realizes that Perrin truly is as straightforward as he seems and decides to tell Perrin his punishment now. Perrin is to pay five hundred crowns to the families of the men he killed, and must fight with all of his strength in the Last Battle. Perrin deems it fair. Byar appears behind Perrin to stab him in the back, but Bornhald kills Byar before he can land the blow.
