After dodging a knife thrown at him, Gawyn chases and then fights the assassin, a person of small stature who is wearing black. After the assasin runs off, Gawyn gets caught in the trap of Air that Egwene had set for the assassin. Mat, Noal, and Thom discuss the things that they are bringing to the Tower of Ghenjei to fulfill the rhyme of the snakes and foxes: courage to strengthen, fire to blind, music to dazzle, iron to bind. Later, Mat realizes that Birgitte knows about the Tower. He lets himself get caught after fighting cutpurses and an assasin, and Birgitte takes him to an inn after taking her leave from Elayne and Ellorien, who are watching a performance. Birgitte says that the doorframe gateways bind outsiders to treaties that make it impossible to get anywhere useful in the realm of the Aelfinn and Eelfinn, but going directly through the Tower will allow the snakes and foxes to shed blood, which can have strange results. They may try to incapacitate those who enter. She says that iron will hurt, ward, and hold them, fire will scare and kill them, music will entrance them. But fire and music become less effective with use. The Tower is a portal rather than a place. The snakes and foxes are not necessarily going to be allies. They feed off of emotion and especially like Aes Sedai. Going someplace specific in their realm is difficult. The grand hall is where one goes to make a deal. When she was there in a past life, she tried pouring iron dust on the floor to mark her way since the snakes and foxes can't touch it. However, she either never crossed the same path twice, or the snakes and foxes were able to blow the dust away. She and Gaidal were cornered and killed after wandering for over two months. Birgitte senses that Elayne is angry and injured, and she and Mat rush to the palace. ← Previous Chapter Next Chapter →
