14. A Memory of Light - Chapter 49 - Light and Shadow - Chapter Summary

In the wolf dream, Perrin sees everything being consumed by nothingness as he approaches the Pit, but he can also see Dragonmount, even though it should be too far to see. In the Pit, Lanfear uses Compulsion on Perrin. Lanfear asks him to help her kill Nynaeve and Moiraine so she can take control of Moridin, save the Dark One, and be raised to the highest of the high. As she counts to three, Perrin's love for Faile allows him to overcome the Compulsion and snap Lanfear's neck. He was unable to completely erase the Compulsion, so he still feels love for Lanfear.

The destruction of the seals releases the Dark One, but Rand holds the Dark One and pulls it into the Pattern. The Dark One is at once tiny and vast. Rand almost crushes it out of existence, but knows that to do so would make the worlds of possibility a reality. Instead he braids together the three powers, forging a new shield on the Bore, sealing it. He knows now that the Dark One was never the real enemy.

Moiraine and Nynaeve flee the Pit. Moiraine looks back and sees Rand and Moridin standing in the light, which expands and consumes the entire mountain. She watches the blackness in front of Rand shrink and vanish.
