After sunset, the townspeople fly into a frenzy of bloodlust, and Mat and the others must kill many to escape.

Thom found a man with a drawing of Mat who said that a woman from up north offered a reward for anyone who has seen him.

In the morning, they return to town, where all the dead are living again and the villagers are back to normal. The mayor says it started several months ago. The villagers don't remember what happens at night, and they always reappear in their beds every morning even if they die or try to leave. Outsiders are forbidden because they either end up just like the villagers or are killed.

Mat decides to go to the town up north where the woman is handing out drawings of him and Perrin.
