Noal sacrifices himself to attack the Aelfinn to Mat and Thom can escape. He reveals that he is Jain Farstrider and tells them to tell the Malkieri of his death.

They reach the chamber where the Aelfinn answered Mat's questions, but the doorframe has been shattered. Moiraine awakens.

The Aelfinn enter the room. Mat thinks back to what he requested of the Eelfinn: the holes in his memory filled, a way to be free of Aes Sedai and the Power, and a way out of their realm. The third thing that he received was the ashandarei.

Mat stabs the ashandarei into the wall, cutting open a pathway, and he and Thom escape with Moiraine.
