Rand's mother was a wetlander known as Shaiel. Gitara Moroso had told her that her land and people would face disaster if she did not become a Maiden of the Spear. Shaiel left a husband she did not love and a son she regretted leaving behind.

Rand's father was Janduin, clan chief of the Taardad Aiel, who led the Aiel who killed Laman.

Shaiel was pregnant when she went to fight in the Aiel War. After learning of her death, Janduin gave up his place as clan chief and went to the Blight, where he was said to have been killed by a man who resembled Shaiel.
