Aviendha, Amys, Cadsuane, Talaan, and Alivia fight Graendal at Shayol Ghul. Graendal's balefire is making the area unstable.

Suddenly, plants rapidly sprout and grow in the valley. The lightning solidifies into crystal. The clouds form the ancient symbol of Aes Sedai.

Aviendha kills an enthralled Aiel, then realizes that it was Rhuarc.

Alviarin now leads M'Hael's people. Mishraile, who has been Turned, sees Rand escape by gateway. They pursue him and he leads them into a stedding, where the Ogier capture them and will keep them there indefinitely. The Rand that they saw was Androl in disguise.

When Pevara and Androl depart, they discover the Trollocs slaughtering the Caemlyn refugees.

Aviendha creates a spear of light to stab Graendal just as she travels away with the True Source, and is taken with her. Aviendha's feet and legs are gravely wounded by Graendal's attack.
