Both of them pretend that it is a box of Two Rivers tabac that Mat purchased from Egwene. Faile notices Vanin watching her. Just as Berisha is making a gateway for Faile to go to Merrilor, a bubble of evil occurs, causing sharp black crystals to appear out of the ground. Berisha is mortally injured. Faile and the band escape through the gateway only to find that they have been sent to the Blight. Ituralde returned and asked to be taken into custody. Aviendha senses faint channeling from within the camp, but this has been forbidden. She finds red-veils outside of Darlin's tent. They capture her, but Cadsuane saves her. Aviendha realizes that the red-veils are the male Aiel channelers who were exiled to the Blight, and she and Cadsuane will warn the others that not all Aiel serve Rand. Aviendha finds Hessalam channeling while in hiding. Hessalam escapes, and the Shadow's forces attack. Darlin fears that he has been corrupted, so Aviendha tells him to gather all the leaders and not allow one person to be in charge, and just to focus on holding and not falling back. Rand finds himself in a place of nothingness where he can perceive the Pattern itself. The Dark One speaks to him, then brings all his force to bear against Rand. Perrin is injured and too weak to heal himself. Lanfear abandons Perrin because he lost to Slayer. He goes to Merrilor but is still in the dream. He collapses and gives up. From Setalle's knowledge of channeling, it seems possible that Berisha sent them to the Blight intentionally, and that her fatal wound was actually from a knife and not from the black crystals. Setalle says that it is possible for an Aes Sedai with a Talent for sensing residues to find out that they were sent to the Blight. Since it would take months to go south to leave the Blight, Setalle proposes going north to the forces of the Light at Shayol Ghul instead. Faile is convinced that Berisha was murdered, and that there may be a Darkfriend among them now. Aviendha and the channelers have been fighting red-veils all day and night. She moves away from the circle to defeat a group of red-veils, and then the circle vanishes. Hessalam has killed Sarene's Warder and enslaved Sarene with Compulsion. Hessalam vanishes with Sarene without using a gateway. Damer Flinn lost his left arm in the attack. ← Previous Chapter Next Chapter →
