Outside of the Tower, Moiraine says that the Aelfinn and the Eelfinn drained her ability to channel. Her capacity for the Power has been greatly reduced. They claimed that they had killed Lanfear by draining her too quickly, but Moiraine suspects that they might have been lying to scare her. Once, when she was awoken, a man was there who said that she was not the one he wanted.

Moiraine asks for the angreal, which was one of her demands of the Eelfinn. It gives her more capacity to channel. They used it against her, making their feeding more enjoyable. Moiraine does not say what her other two demands were.

Moiraine wants to meet with Rand. Mat and Thom tell Moiraine of all has happened in her absence.

Moiraine asks Thom to marry her, much to Mat's surprise. Thom mentions his discomfort with women who can channel the One Power, and Moiraine offers to discard her angreal, but Thom says that he doesn't want to rob her of anything. Thom says that he will be Moiraine's Warder.

Moiraine tells Mat that the Warder bond would serve him well, but Mat says that he won't be anyone's Warder. Thom points out that Tuon can learn to channel, and Mat is dismayed at the suggestion.

Mat goes to scout the area where the gateway is supposed to appear. While there, he builds a cairn for Noal. Then he throws his knife behind him and ends up killing a rabbit. Then he spots a discarded, barely-used cooking pot.
