Mat asks about Thom's letter. Thom insists that Mat read it. It is from Moiraine, who says that she is not dead, and Thom must show Mat the letter only after he asks about it.

She says that Mat, Thom, and a man whom Moiraine doesn't recognize will attempt to rescue her. Only those three may go or they will all die. Even with those three, they might fail. Moiraine urges Thom to remember the game of Snakes and Foxes if they attempt the rescue.

Speaking to Olver and Noal, Mat realizes that they must go to the Tower of Ghenjei to find Moiraine. Olver says that you must use a bronze knife to carve the Snakes and Foxes symbol on the tower to open it. Mat saw the tower from Domon's ship and will ask him where it is.

Noal asks to go with Mat and Thom. Mat reluctantly agrees, and the dice in his head stop.
