He sees an old Aiel woman beside him, saying he is doing the right thing. Rand says he knows that he asked the Aelfinn the wrong question, and that the freedom to choose is their fate. Mat sees Fain's rotting body, and leaves the dagger behind. He finds his hat and walks away with Ashandarei as the dagger melts into Fain's corpse. Perrin finds Nynaeve and Moiraine with Rand in the Healing tent. Flinn hasn't been able to stop Rand's decline. Perrin learns of Egwene's death. Moridin is in the tent as well, but Flinn says that he is also dying. Perrin insists that Min, Elayne, and Aviendha be brought to say goodbye to Rand. Outside he sees Lan and Nynaeve embrace. Loial tries to find Mat and Perrin to hear their stories. Everyone has told Loial that Rand sealed the Bore at noon. The Aes Sedai are trying to convince Ituralde to take the throne of Arad Doman now that Alsalam is dead. They say the Merchant Council has all gone missing. Loial finds Lan and Nynaeve in the Healing tent, each wearing a simple crown. Nynaeve says that Moridin is getting better and Rand is getting worse. Flinn is confused that the three women bonded to Rand don't seem to be worried. Mat returns to Seanchan and Fortuona demands to know where he has been. He points upward and Aludra's nightflower show begins. Min has had a viewing that reveals that Fortuona is pregnant by Mat. Fortuona says this means she is now free to kill Mat, but he is unfazed. Perrin weeps, not having found Faile. She would have been queen because of her parents' death. Perrin collapses from exhaustion. Moghedien's Sharans were hit by an explosion. She has disguised herself as a worker. Now that the Dark One has been sealed, she is safe from punishment. She has her cour'souvra. But a sul'dam sneaks up and leashes Moghedien. Nynaeve announces that Rand has died. Gregorin survived, and Nynaeve hears him express surprise that Nynaeve is not crying. But Nynaeve has realized that the three women bonded to Rand know something that they are not telling. She finds Aviendha, who says Rhuarc's death means that her vision can't come true now. Bair says the visions are warnings against possible futures that must be prevented. Nynaeve demands that Aviendha tells her what is going on. Aviendha says they should prepare Rand's pyre. Perrin runs through the wolf dream, racked with grief and guilt. He sees Faile as a falcon in the dream, with a broken leg pinned under a rock. He takes her to Nynaeve and is with her while she is healed. She awakens. Birgitte is able to stay briefly even though the other Heroes have gone. Soldiers prepare Rand's pyre. Elayne won't tell Birgitte what she knows about Rand. Birgitte sent Olver to a safe place where he can throw the Horn away where it will never be found, since she knows Elayne would have tried to keep Olver and the Horn as a weapon. Birgitte says Gaidal was reborn a few years ago, and Birgitte senses she is about to be reborn to a woman who is giving birth now. She fades away. Tam light's Rand's funeral pyre. Min, Elayne, and Aviendha go up to the pyre. They will keep the secret that Rand is not truly gone. Min feels the bond growing stronger. Rand awakens, having switched bodies with Moridin. A single unmoving saa, in the shape of the Dragon's Fang, is in his right eye. Alivia has gathered things for Rand to take with him on his journeys. He watches from a distance as his old body, in which Moridin died, is burned on the pyre. Cadsaune sees him, and nods to him before he leaves. Cadsuane understands what has happened, and departs, but she is stopped by Aes Sedai who want her to be raised Amyrlin. Rand finds that he can no longer channel any power. He has nothing to light his pipe with, so he thinks of the pipe lit, and it is. He looks back and sees the three women look directly at him. He thinks of where he will journey, and a wind rises, marking an ending. ← Previous Chapter (End of Chapter Summaries)
