The Eelfinn attack, and Mat uses luck to decide where to run. They find a twisted doorway that takes them to the Chamber of Bonds. Moiraine floats above the center of the room, swathed in mist, wearing an aged ivory bracelet on one wrist. Mat reaches up to pull her out, but the mist burns his hands. Thom reaches in, enduring the pain, and pulls her free, wrapping her in his gleeman's cloak. She is alive. Thom puts the bracelet into his pocket. The Eelfinn appear on the pedestals in the room, saying that the bracelet is a powerful angreal, and they may have it if they agree to pay Moiraine's price. Mat requests that the Eelfinn restore the way out as part of the bargain, and give them a straight pathway to it, and not hurt them or incapacitate them. They ask what price Mat will pay, but another whispers that the price has been set. When he went through the first doorframe, the snakes told Mat that he would give up half the light of the world to save the world. Mat knows that this is the price. Mat goes into the circle of Eelfinn and they rip out his left eye. Mat screams in agony, and he can see an almost invisible mist of red and white emerging from him. The Eelfinn breathe it in and become intoxicated. After overcoming the pain, Mat leads the others along the path to the exit. Noal realizes that Mat only asked the foxes not to attack them, and Mat tells them to run when they see the Aelfinn coming after them. ← Previous Chapter Next Chapter →
