When Rand's foot touched the darkness, Nynaeve saw him and Moridin stop moving, as if frozen. She discovers that Moridin has brought Alanna here and mortally wounded her, to drive Rand mad with rage when she dies. She tries to think of a way to Heal Alanna in spite of Rand being in control of the circle.

Mat and Egwene are aware that Faile and the Horn are missing. Part of Mat's plan involves blocking the river and having a ragtag group defend it. Since the armies are outnumbered and they are out of food, Mat has a secret plan to bait the enemy and then utterly destroy them. The enemy arrives earlier than anticipated.

Perrin is near death, but his hammer gives him warmth and strength. He wills himself awake and emerges in the real world, where he hears Master Luhhan's voice recognizing him.
