A guide to completing the second World 6 Fortress in Super Mario Bros 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
How to Clear the Second Fortress of World 6
Go to the right, but don't go past the one raised Ice Block, because there is a Thwomp to the right of it. Stand on the raised block, then run to the right to fall down the hole before the Thwomp can hit you, and beware of the Boo ghost that starts coming toward you.
Go to the right, and you can hit the ? Block to get a Super Mushroom or Super Leaf.
Then jump up onto the Ice Blocks above. There is a Thwomp above. You don't have to jump into its path to make it start moving. Just jump onto the Ice Blocks near the ? Block. Then when it starts moving back toward the left, quickly jump up through the hole and go to the right, past the raised Ice Block, to be safe from this Thwomp.
Go to the right and you will see a Thwomp below. Approach the hole in the ice to make the Thwomp move toward you, then wait for it to start moving slowly back to the right, then try to fall straight down the two holes in the ice to go past the Thwomp before it reaches the right side.
Go to the right and jump up onto the ledge, then when the Thwomp starts moving back to the left, jump up to the upper ledge, then if you're tall, run and then crouch so you slide through the short gap. If you're small, you can just run to the right through the gap.
After you get past the gap, go to the right and fall down onto the short ledge before the hole in the floor. There are Roto-Discs to the right, so jump carefully to the ledge that the Roto-Discs are spinning around. Hit the ? Block to get a Super Mushroom or Super Leaf.
Then carefully go to the right, and the Thwomp above you will move. When it moves back toward the right, try to jump up through the hole after the Thwomp has gone past, and you can try to land on the Ice Block and stay to the left of the center of it, allowing you to face the Boo ghost without being in the range of the two Roto-Discs. Or you can try to just run to the right, past the Boo ghost and the two Roto-Discs.
After that, there is another Thwomp. Let it go to the right, then try to fall down the small hole to the lower ledge while it moves slowly back to the left.
Slowly go to the right, because there is another Thwomp. Try to jump over it to reach the upper ledge, then go through the door.
Boom Boom
Boom Boom will move left and right, and sometimes he will crouch and slide. Whenever he crouches, his spiky shell is not safe to stomp on. Try to stomp on him when he is running around. You can also hit him with fireballs if you're Fire Mario. After you stomp him the first time, he will sometimes suddenly stop, then jump high up. It can be difficult to aim your jumps correctly when he stops and jumps, so watch him closely. After you stomp on him a second time, he will very quickly run left and right, so jump carefully to avoid letting him bump into you.
After you stomp him a third time, he is defeated, and drops a Magic Ball. Collect it and you will complete the level.
After the Level
A bridge will appear, giving you access to a pipe that is a shortcut to the earlier part of the map.
You can now move on to World 6-8.
