A guide to completing World 3-1 in Super Mario Bros 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

How to Clear World 3-1

At the start of the level, you can go downward along the left side of the screen to find a ? Block that contains a Super Mushroom or Fire Flower.

Go back up, then start going to the right. There is a pipe with bubbles coming out that will push you upward when you go past. After that, there is a Bloober (a.k.a. Blooper) floating up and down. Avoid it or hit it with a fireball to get rid of it. After that, there is another pipe blowing bubbles upward.

Next, go downward and dodge the Bloober or hit it with a fireball. There is a pipe on the right blowing bubbles downward.

Farther down, after a pipe, there is a Lava Lotus flower that spits several fireballs that move slowly upward and outward. Get the coins above the Lava Lotus while dodging its fireballs.

To the right, there are several coins and two ? blocks. There is a Lava Lotus flower under the ? blocks. The leftmost ? block contains a Super Mushroom or Fire Flower. Above that, there is a pipe blowing bubbles downward.

If you need another Super Mushroom or Fire Flower, go upward so you're up against the wooden blocks, then jump as high as you can out of the water while pushing left. You should end up on the hidden roof, and you can go to the left to reach a ? block in a pit of water. The ? block contains a Super Mushroom or Fire Flower. When you're done, jump up on the right side to go back onto the roof and go to the right to get back in the water.

To the right, there is a Bloober with kids. You can go down into the pit near the two pink corals, to enter a secret area with a bunch of Note Blocks. There is a Lava Lotus on the right. After you get past the Note Blocks, collect the coins and then hit the brick to get a 1UP Mushroom. Then go up the bubbles from the pipe to return to the upper area, but beware of the Bloober above you. Then go up the pipe to reach the end of the level.

There aren't any enemies hiding beneath the Goal Block in this level, so just hit the Goal Block to clear the level.

After that, you might want to use a Super Leaf from your inventory if you have one, because in World 3-2, you can get a few extra coins and a 1UP Mushroom if you're Raccoon Mario.
