World 3-4

A guide to completing World 3-4 in Super Mario Bros 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

How to Clear World 3-4

Go to the right and there are two Goombas on the slope, followed by a Piranha Plant in a pipe. After that, there is a small pool of water, followed by a Venus Fire Trap in a pipe. Just past that, there is a ? Block that contains a Super Mushroom or Super Leaf.

Jump on top of where the ? block was, then go onto the hill on the right. Then slide down the slope to get rid of the three Goombas. There is a pool of water after that, and if you run and jump at the bottom of the slope, you might be able to jump over it, but you don't have to. Instead, you can go to the right side of the pool (which contains a Green Cheep-Cheep), jump up to reveal a hidden block, then stand on the left edge of that block and jump up to reveal another hidden block. Jump from there to the top of the hill on the right.

Slide down this hill as well, and you'll get rid of three Green Koopa Troopas.

Next, there are several ? blocks, as well as a Para-Goomba that flies up and drops Micro-Goombas, a Red Para-Goomba that follows you around, and a Venus Fire Trap in the pipe up above.

The ? block by itself to the right of the pipe contains a Super Mushroom or Fire Flower (but if you're Raccoon Mario, you might want to stay Raccoon Mario to make the rest of the level easier). The rightmost ? block beneath the pipe contains a P Switch that reveals a bunch of invisible coins in this area. You'll need to run and slide under it if you're tall.

Next, if you're Raccoon Mario and you want to skip some coins and a 1UP Mushroom, you can just run to the right from here, then start flying when your P Meter is full, and you'll skip past a Lakitu that drops Spiny Eggs on the ground, which turn into Spinys when they land on the ground. (Or you can fly up in order to stomp on the Lakitu and get rid of it (but it will reappear after a short time).)

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, if you're Raccoon Mario, but you don't want to skip the coins and 1UP Mushroom, you can fly up in order to stomp on the Lakitu and get rid of it (but it will reappear after a short time).

Otherwise, go to the right and you find a platform of bricks. Go under this platform and hit every brick. The second brick from the left contains a 1UP Mushroom and the rest contain coins.

To the right of those bricks, there are some gaps, followed by two ? Blocks. The one on the right contains a Super Mushroom or Super Leaf.

After that, you reach the end of the level. Hit the Goal Block to clear the level.

After the Level

If the bridges are down, you can now reach the second Toad House, where you have a chance of getting a Fire Flower, a Super Leaf, or a Frog Suit.

If you got a Hammer from the Hammer Bros, you can use it on the boulder that is blocking your path to a rowboat on the right. You can use the rowboat to reach an island with two Toad Houses (where you have a chance of getting a Fire Flower, a Super Leaf, or a Frog Suit) and two pade Games, and a third Toad House to the east, where you have a chance of getting a Super Mushroom, a Fire Flower, or a Super Leaf. You can optionally row even farther east to see the castle of this world, but there's no way to land there with the rowboat.

When you're ready to move on, you can visit World 3-5 (which is almost entirely underwater, making it a good choice for the Frog Suit... or you might want to use a P Wing to fly over the water, which also allows you to hit the bricks on top of the wooden blocks to get some coins). Or you can go to World 3-6.
