A guide to completing World 4-1 in Super Mario Bros 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

How to Clear World 4-1

As you go to the right, you find that all the enemies and obstacles are much larger than in previous worlds. A red Piranhacus Giganticus comes up from a pipe, and there is a Grand Goomba after that. Then there is a Mega ? Block that just contains one coin, and a red Giant Koopa Troopa on a couple of blocks. You can pick up and kick the shell just like you can with normal-sized Koopa shells. Use the shell to hit the ? Block on top of the giant brick to get a Super Mushroom or Super Leaf.

Above a small gap, there are three coins. After that, there is a Colossal Koopa Paratroopa, followed by a waterfall. Swim through the waterfall to reach the right side.

Here there is a short wall of normal bricks, then a Grand Goomba that falls down from a Mega ? Block (which contains a Super Mushroom or Super Leaf), and a Colossal Koopa Paratroopa. The normal brick beneath the Mega ? Block contains one coin. If you're Raccoon Mario, you can get rid of all the enemies here and break the bricks at the lower level to give yourself room to run toward the right and fill your P Meter, then fly up above the pipes that the waterfall is coming from. When you're in the upper waterfall, you can swim upward into a watery area.

In the watery area, swim to the left, but beware of the normal-sized Venus Fire Trap. At the leftmost side of the watery area, go down the pipe to enter a hidden area. In the hidden area, there are two Big Berthas that spit their Baby Cheep at you, then the Baby Cheep goes back into their mouths. Hit all the bricks here to get coins and a couple of 1UP Mushrooms. There is also a brick here that apparently can't be hit. Whether it contains something or not is anyone's guess. When you're done here, go up the pipe on the right. You'll emerge in the right side of the watery area.

From the watery area, you can either go to the left and go down the waterfall to reach the area below, or you can go to the right and jump out onto the floating wooden platform, then fall straight down from the right side of that platform to reach a large cloud.

To the right of that cloud, there is a pipe, then some cloud platforms, one of which has a red Giant Koopa Troopa. After that, there is a brick platform with three coins and a red Giant Koopa Troopa, then a Mega ? Block with a red Giant Koopa Troopa on it. Try to stomp a red Koopa Troopa and kick its shell at the Mega ? Block. It just contains one coin.

From the Mega ? Block, jump to the right to get on top of the pipe. After that, there is another pipe across a gap, with a Venus Fire Trap that comes up and down. Jump across the gap when it's safe, then go to the right and stomp or avoid the green Giant Koopa Troopa, then go through the pipe on the right.

Go to the right and hit the Goal Block to complete the level. Afterward, you can go to World 4-2.
