A guide to completing World 6-9 in Super Mario Bros 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
How to Clear World 6-9
If you use a P Wing before you enter this level, you can fly up and to the right, hit the brick above the Koopa Troopa to get a 1UP Mushroom, then continue going to the right to reach the Goal Block.
If you have a Frog Suit, you can get some coins and three 1UP Mushrooms in this level.
Otherwise, go to the right and go down the pipe.
You will land in some water, where there is a Green Cheep-Cheep, and a Bloober with kids to the right of that.
If you don't have a Frog Suit and you want a Fire Flower, skip this paragraph. If you don't mind skipping a Fire Flower, or if you have the Frog Suit and want some coins and three 1UP Mushrooms, stay in the underwater area and go to the right, past a pipe that pushes you downward, and a Big Bertha that spits a Baby Cheep. If you don't have the Frog Suit, the pipe after the Big Bertha will push you to the upper area. Swim to the right from there, then skip ahead to Part 2 of this level. If you do have the Frog Suit, you can swim past the pipe after the Big Bertha to reach the rightmost pipe. Go down that pipe. Fall through as many coins as you can on the way down, then hit the Mega ? Block to get three 1UP Mushrooms. Then skip ahead to Part 2 of this level.
To get the Fire Flower, go to the Wood Block above the Bloober with kids. Jump on top of it and then jump onto the icy ledge above. Go to the right and carefully jump over the Munchers. Then wait for the Piranha Plant to go back up into its pipe, and try to make a running jump across the gap. If you fall into the gap, you will have to swim to the left and jump on the Wood Block to try again.
After you make it across the gap, jump over the next set of Munchers. Then hit the Note Block to get a Super Mushroom or Fire Flower. If you're Fire Mario, try to shoot the Piranha Plant that comes out of the pipe. Run to the right to get past the gaps with Munchers in them.
Part 2
This part of the area starts with a Green Cheep-Cheep and a pipe, with a Wood Block above the pipe. You can optionally just swim to the right, past some enemies, and go to the top of the slope to the right, then press down to slide down the slope and jump up to the ledge on the left. From there, you can go up the pipe above the Venus Fire Trap to reach the Goal Block and complete the level.
But if you want some coins and a Super Mushroom or Fire Flower instead, jump on top of the Wood Block, then jump up to the upper area. Jump over the first set of Munchers so you're standing on the stack of two Wood Blocks. Then jump up and slightly left to hit the space just to the right of the wall above, revealing a hidden brick. Then you can jump onto the icy ledge just to the right of the stack of two Wood Blocks, and jump up to hit the brick above you, revealing a P Switch. Then jump onto the brick you revealed on the left, and from there jump onto the P Switch. This turns all the Munchers into coins, so fall down, optionally get the four coins on the left, then get the eight coins on the right.
There is a Super Mushroom or Fire Flower hidden in the Note Block, but if you jump on the Note Block from above, the item will fall into the water. You can either get the two coins, or just go into the water if the item from the Note Block fell down there.
Afterward, swim back up to the Wood Block and jump back out of the water. Go to the right, past the Piranha Plant. Then go to the right and jump on top of the pipe that the Venus Fire Trap is coming up and down from. Jump up through the pipe in the ceiling.
Then go to the right and hit the Goal Block to complete the level.
After the Level
You can optionally go to World 6-10, or continue on to the third fortress of World 6.
