A guide to completing World 5-5 in Super Mario Bros 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
How to Clear World 5-5
If you get 28 coins in this world, a White Mushroom House will appear on the World Map, where you will get a P-Wing.
Most of the floor in this level is made of Donut Lifts, which fall after you stand on them for a short time. As you go through the level, look for wooden blocks to stand on if you need to.
To the right, there are two Green Paratroopas and a Para-Goomba. After that, you can bump into the top wooden block to get a Super Mushroom or Super Leaf.
If you want to get all the coins to unlock the White Mushroom House, you need to break the bricks on top of the second pipe, then go down the pipe to get 10 coins. At the bottom, hit the Mega ? Block to get a Tanooki Suit. Then go to the right and go up the pipe.
To get all the coins, you need to go to the LEFT from that pipe. You will find a Para-Goomba, and also a Fire Chomp, also known as a Flame Chomp. It flies around spitting fireballs at you. When it runs out of fireballs, it starts flashing, then explodes. You can stomp it to get rid of it sooner, but make sure it's not about to spit a fireball at you.
After a gap, there is a Para-Goomba that drops Micro-Goombas.
Next, ignore the coins under the Donut Lifts for now. Just run past so the Donut Lifts don't fall yet.
To the left, get past the Venus Fire Trap, then hit the four ? Blocks under the Red Venus Fire Trap, and watch out for the Green Paratroopa in this area. The leftmost ? Block contains a Super Mushroom or Super Leaf. You should have collected three coins here, for a total of 13.
Now go back to the right and collect the coins above and below the Donut Lifts. Be sure to jump as soon as you collect the coin beneath the lift. There are 14 coins in this area, so your total should now be 27. Only one more is needed to unlock the White Mushroom House.
Go to the right, and get past the Para-Goomba and Flame Chomp.
Get past the Piranha Plant in the pipe, and go to the right to find a structure of wooden blocks and bricks. To the right of that structure, there is a wooden block on top of a Donut Lift, and you can optionally bump into that wooden block to get a Super Mushroom or Super Leaf.
Then break the bricks in the middle of the wooden block structure, then quickly hit the upper-left brick to get a coin. You should now have enough to unlock the White Mushroom House. The upper-right brick contains a Super Mushroom or Super Leaf.
Go to the right, but beware of the Venus Fire Trap in the pipe hanging from above. Then go right, where there is a Paratroopa, and a Para-Goomba that drops Micro-Goombas. Keep going to the right from there to reach the end of the level. Hit the Goal Block to complete the level.
After the Level
If you made the White Mushroom House appear, go into it to get a P Wing.
You can visit the Toad House to the north, where you have a chance of getting a Fire Flower, a Super Leaf, or a Tanooki Suit.
If the Hammer Brother is in your path, you can fight them to get a Music Box.
You can optionally visit the Spade House for a chance to get 1UPs.
