A guide to completing World 4-2 in Super Mario Bros 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
How to Clear World 4-2
If you get all the coins in this world (24 coins in total), a White Mushroom House will appear on the World Map, where you will get an Anchor.
In this level, the water will go up and down, and some platforms will become completely submerged. Cheep-Cheeps will swim back and forth and will try to jump out of the water to hit you.
Go to the right and jump onto the pipe. Then make a running jump to stomp the red Giant Koopa Troopa. The next pipe also has a red Koopa Troopa, and the pipe after that has a red Piranhacus Giganticus.
Next, there is a pipe with three Ice Blocks on top. You can pick one up and kick it at the Mega ? Block to the right to get a Super Mushroom or Super Leaf.
Then there is a pipe with a red Venus Fire Trap in it. To the right, there is a gap, followed by another pipe with a red Venus Fire Trap. You might want to make a running jump to reach this pipe.
Now you reach the first place to get coins in this level. You will have to be quick if you want to get them all. Wait for the water level to go all the way down, then as soon as it starts coming up, jump to fall through all the coins, then quickly jump up and right to get out of the water. Make a running jump through the four coins without hitting the ? Block (more Cheep-Cheeps will start jumping out of the water around this point), then run right, jumping over the Piranhacus Giganticus if necessary, and get the four coins, jump over the brick wall without hitting any, then jump and get the three coins. When the P Switch wears off, get the three vertical coins here, then go back to the left to get the three vertical coins. Then you can go back to the ? Block to get the Starman from it if you wish.
From there, just go to the right, past the two Piranhacus Giganticus, to reach the pipe at the right side of this area. Go through the pipe, then go to the right and hit the Goal Block to complete the level.
After the Level
If you revealed the White Mushroom House by getting all the coins in this level, go there to get an Anchor, which prevents airships from moving if you lose a life on an airship.
Then you can optionally visit the first Toad House, where you have a chance of getting a Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, or Super Leaf.
Then you can move on to World 4-3.
