A guide to completing World 1-5 in Super Mario Bros 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

How to Clear World 1-5

You start on an icy slope. Press Down on the directional pad to slide down and defeat the four Buzzy Beetles. You'll land in a pool of water. Jump up to get the coins above the water.

Next go to the right, up a slope. At the top, there is a pipe with a Red Piranha Plant coming out of it, and a Buzzy Beetle that approaches from the right. The Piranha Plant won't hide in its pipe when you're standing beneath it, so just go past when the Piranha Plant has moved most of the way back up into the pipe.

There are now two paths that you can take. The upper path leads to a hidden path with a bunch of coins, and if you're Raccoon Mario, you can also get a 1UP in the hidden path. But you can also take the lower path to get a few extra coins and a Super Mushroom or a Fire Flower (but don't get the Fire Flower if you're Raccoon Mario and you want the 1UP) then go back and take the upper path.

If you don't want to bother with the lower path, then go up the upper-right path and skip to the next paragraph. The lower path is to the right of the pipe with the Green Piranha Plant coming out. Stand near the pipe to make the Piranha Plant hide. To the right, if you're Raccoon Mario and you want to go back for the hidden 1UP, don't get the Fire Flower from the ? block. Or if you don't want to bother with the hidden path at all, you can hit the ? block to get a Super Mushroom or Fire Flower, then go to the right, up the slope, and skip ahead to Aboveground Area. If you do want to go back and visit the hidden path, go to the left, then when you reach the pipe, go up the upper-right path.

You'll see an area above ground, but before you leave the underground, there is a hidden Magic Note Block. It is up against the left side of the tunnel going up out of the underground. Jump up so that you are up against the left side of the vertical part of the tunnel, and the hidden Magic Note Block will appear. Then jump on top of the Note Block and press the jump button at the correct moment, and you will reach an area on a cloud with a bunch of coins. If you are Raccoon Mario, collect the first two sets of coins, then go to the left and start running to the right, then fly up and you will find a circle of coins with a brick in the middle. Hit the brick to get a 1UP Mushroom. Quickly collect any remaining coins around the brick, then go back down and collect the coins down there. Go down the pipe at the end.

Aboveground Area

Go to the right and jump up the two ledges, then slide down the slope to defeat the Green Koopa Troopa. Then go down into the next underground area, but don't slide down this slope. There is a Red Venus Fire Trap in the pipe below. After you get past that Venus Fire Trap, go to the right, and there is a Piranha Plant going up and down in the pipe that hangs from the ceiling. Go past it when it has gone most of the way back up into its pipe, and keep going to the right. Jump and press up to go up this final pipe.

Run to the right and hit the Goal Block to get a symbol.

You can now move on to World 1-6.
