How to Clear Yoshi's Island 1

Watch out for the blue Unshelled Koopa that slides down the slope on the right. You can stomp it or just jump over it. Then jump onto the slope that it slid down from, but be careful, because you'll keep sliding back down the slope unless you continue to move toward the right. Jump off the right side of the slope to get the Dragon Coin. If you collect five or more of these, you get a 1-UP.

Then go to the right, but watch out for the Banzai Bill that moves from the right side of the screen to the left. You can press down to crouch under it and avoid it.

This is followed by a Rex. If you stomp a Rex, it will become flat, but will keep walking. Stomp it again to get rid of it.

Next, there is a Flying Prize Block. Jump up and hit it from beneath before it flies away, and you get a Super Mushroom, which turns you into Super Mario. If you get hit while you're Super Mario, you will turn back into Small Mario.

Next, there is another Rex, followed by another one coming down an angled pipe. As with the slope earlier in the level, you will keep sliding down the pipe unless you continue to walk up it.

To the right, there is another Rex, followed by three slopes, two Rexes that walk beneath the slopes, and a Dragon Coin after the slopes. Be sure to jump and get the Dragon Coin.

Then, if you walk past the bush after the three slopes, a Super Mushroom will pop out. If you take it and you're still Super Mario, the Super Mushroom will go into the Item Stock. If you get hit and turn into Small Mario, the item in the Item Stock will automatically fall down for you to take. You can also press Select to make the item fall down from the Item Stock whenever you wish.

After that, there is a Rex, as well as a Jumping Piranha Plant that jumps out of the pipe.

After that, there are Blocks above a pipe. If you're still Super Mario, you can press A while standing on these blocks to destroy them. Then you can press down while standing on top of the pipe to go down the pipe into a secret room.

In the secret room, there are six coins, as well as the third Dragon Coin, which you can reach by pressing A while standing on top of the Blocks. After you collect all the items, go into the pipe on the right.

If you went through the pipe in the secret room, you will be launched out of the angled pipe to the right of the pipe that you used to enter the secret room. To the right of the angled pipe, there is a Rex, and a Jumping Piranha Plant.

Next, there is the Midway Gate. If you are Small Mario when you go through the Midway Gate, you automatically turn into Super Mario. In addition, if you lose a life after you go through the Midway Gate, you will start at the Midway Gate the next time you play this level.

After this, you may notice a Dotted Line Block after the Midway Gate. These can be filled in by visiting special locations, which will be mentioned later in the guide.

After the Dotted Line Block, there is a Message Block that explains about the Item Stock in the middle of the top of the screen.

Next, there is a Rex, followed by three Rexes. You can jump up the ledges to get the Dragon Coin at the top. You can then get on the slope and press down to slide down it, and you will automatically stomp the Rex at the bottom. Afterward, make sure you're in the ditch, and crouch down to avoid the Banzai Bill that goes across the screen.

There is a 3-Up Moon in the sky above this ditch, but if this is your first time through the level, there is no way to get it right now. You can come back later as Caped Mario or with a Blue Yoshi if you want to get it.

Go to the right and stomp the Rex, then hit the Message Block to learn how to pick up and throw an item upward: hold X or Y and touch the shell to pick it up, then hold the up button and let go of X or Y to throw the shell upward. Do this to hit the Block above the shell. A 1-UP Mushroom will come out. To get it, hold X or Y to run, then run to the right, jump over the gap, get in the ditch and duck under the Banzai Bill. After it goes past, jump over the next gap and get the 1-UP Mushroom when it falls from on top of the clouds.

To the right, there is a Rex and some Blocks, as well as a Prize Block that contains a Fire Flower if you're Super Mario, or a Super Mushroom if you're Small Mario. If you got a Fire Flower, you'll turn into Fire Mario and can throw a fireball by pressing X or Y, and you can throw multiple fireballs left and right if you press and hold A.

After that, there are two Rexes. If you're Fire Mario, you can hit them with fireballs to turn them into coins. Then there is a Banzai Bill, which is immune to fireballs, so be sure to jump up onto the ledge to avoid it. Then there is a Jumping Piranha Plant, and the fifth Dragon Coin, followed by a Rex.

Then there is a Gray Block on top of the ledge, and after that, there is a Clappin' Chuck, followed by the Giant Gate, which has a moving piece of tape for you to try to run through. If you hit the moving tape when it is at the highest point, you get 50 Bonus Stars and three 1-Ups. If you hit the tape when it is just below the highest point, you get 40 Bonus Stars, and if you hit it lower than that, you get between 1 and 30 Bonus Stars. So try to stomp on the Clappin' Chuck to bounce as high as possible and hit the moving tape. The Clappin' Chuck will be defeated after you stomp on it a few times or hit it with fireballs a few times, so make sure to hit the Giant Gate before that happens.

After the Level

After you go through the Giant Gate, a path opens to the north, leading to the Yellow Switch Palace.
