How to Clear Gnarly

Jump up the Bouncing Boughs. There are four Blocks above a rope. Only hit the rightmost Block. You can get a 1-Up Mushroom later if you don't hit the other Blocks yet. Before you climb up, go to the right and climb the Rope, and it will take you beneath another Block. Hit it to get a 1-Up Mushroom.

Next, climb up the Beanstalk (the rightmost Beanstalk if you hit the other Blocks), and go to the left and get the Dragon Coin above the Block. Then if you're tall, and you want a 1-Up Mushroom, destroy the Block with a Spin Jump, then fall down through the hole beneath it, and hit the second Block from the left to make a Beanstalk appear. Climb all the way up it (but watch out for the red Koopa Paratroopa on the way) to reach a 1-Up Mushroom in the upper-left part of the area.

Climb or fall back down until you're next to two Bouncing Boughs. Go to the right and get the Dragon Coin, then hit the Block on the left to make a P Switch appear. Pick it up and go to the right and bounce up the Jump Blocks. You can hit the Block above the Jump Blocks to get a Cape Feather. Then bounce up onto the Brown Block on the left, and jump up and to the right until you're at the top of the Gray Blocks with the ropes beneath them.

Put the P Switch down on this platform and step on it. This will make some Prize Blocks appear down below. If you want a 1-Up Mushroom, stay on the left side of the Jump Blocks as you fall, and a 1-Up Mushroom will appear. As soon as you are below the Jump Blocks, go to the right to land on a Prize Block. Then jump to the right and go through the pipe. If you fall, just go through the pipe at the bottom of the area and skip to On the Hill on this page.

Part 2

Go to the left to get three Dragon Coins, then go to the right and stay on the ground to get three hidden 1-Up Mushrooms. Then jump up onto the hill above you.

On the Hill

If you're not Caped Mario, skip this paragraph. If you're Caped Mario, pick up the Gray P Switch (the switch on the right) then jump over the other P Switches and run to the left, then run to the right and fly above the Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother, then start floating back down until you find a Lakitu on the right that is throwing Spiny Eggs. Make sure not to go past the Gray Block to the right of the Lakitu or it will fly again. Set down the Gray P Switch and step on it, then collect the Gray Coins that the Lakitu throws. You can also try to press X or Y to hit the Lakitu with your cape, then jump into its cloud and float to the Giant Gate on the right and hit the tape at the highest point.

If you're not Caped Mario, hit one of the P Switches on the left to make Prize Blocks appear in the pit on the right. Go to the right and hit the Flying Platform to defeat the Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bro, then pick up the Gray P Switch and take it with you to the Flying Platform. Go to the right side and activate the Gray P Switch to make the Lakitu start throwing Gray Coins. Then when the Gray P Switch effect wears off, go to the right and go through the Giant Gate.

After the Level

Afterward, the path to the east unlocks and you can go to Tubular.
