This page explains how to complete the level 80 Shadowbringers quest "A Greater Purpose".

Requirements

This quest is available if you have completed the quest The End of a World.

Starting the Quest

Talk to Alphinaud in the Tempest to begin the quest. There will be a cutscene.

Speak with the Administrative Clerk

Go southeast up the ramp bridge until you can go east to where the orange arrow is pointing in the minimap. When there is a northeast path, go northeast to reach stairs that lead down to an Aetheryte Plaza. Attune to it, then go southeast to where the orange arrow is pointing in the minimap. Talk to the Administrative Clerk to proceed.

Wait at the Designated Location

Check on the sparkling Destination to proceed.

Speak with the Administrative Clerk Again

Go to the quest icon and talk to the Administrative Clerk to proceed.

Submit the Visitor's Writ Application to the Secretariat Clerk

Go northwest to exit the building, then go southwest and go up one of the sets of stairs. Go southwest until you can go southeast, then if you took the northern of the two southeast paths, go southwest up the ramp bridge, then go southeast. If you took the southern of the two southeast paths, go northeast at the end. Keep going southeast until you can enter the building to the northeast where the quest icon is. Talk to the Secretariat Clerk to hand over the Visitor's Writ Application.

Find an Empty Seat

Go to the quest icon on the map and check on the sparkling Empty Seat to proceed. There will be a cutscene.

Speak with the Secretariat Clerk

Talk to the Secretariat Clerk to proceed.

Show the Visitor's Writ to Thancred

You can either teleport to the Macarenses Angle and go southwest to where the orange arrow is pointing in the minimap, or you can go southwest to exit the building, then go northwest until you can go northeast, then go northwest to where the orange arrow is pointing in the minimap. Talk to Thancred to hand over the Visitor's Writ and complete the quest. There will be a cutscene.

Unlock Flying in the Tempest

"A Greater Purpose" is the final quest for unlocking Aether Currents in the Tempest. If you have completed the other Aether Current quests and attuned to the Aether Currents in the field in this area (which you can find using the Aether Compass in Main Menu > Duty > Collection in this area) you will be able to fly in the Tempest.
