Artoirel asks you to search for the heretics' lair while he escorts the wounded knight to safety.

Requirements

This quest is available if you have completed the quest Reconnaissance Lost.

Starting the Quest

Talk to Artoirel in the Coerthas Western Highlands to begin the quest.

Search for the Heretics' Trail

Go north to where the orange arrow is pointing in the minimap (or go northeast to the slope that leads down to the frozen river first). Go to the northeast edge of the orange circle to find Fresh Footprints. There will be a glow around them, indicating an instanced battle. Check on the Fresh Footprints and there will be a cutscene, and then the battle will ensue.

Solo Duty: At the End of Our Hope

Go north and check on the Suspicious Footprints. Then go north, kill the Icetrap that attacks (or avoid it), and keep going north to find more Suspicious Footprints. Check on them to proceed. Keep going north, kill or avoid the Icetrap on the way, and check on the next set of Suspicious Footprints.

A Cane-waving Heretic and two Wild-Eyed Swordsmen will attack. Kill the enemies in the following order.

1. Cane-waving Heretic
2. 2x Wild-Eyed Swordsman

A Spineless Heretic will appear. After you have killed the other enemies, the Spineless Heretic will run away. Stop attacking him, and just focus on running after him, ignoring any enemies that attack you along the way. The heretic will lead you into a building and down the stairs. Several enemies will attack you. Kill the enemies in the following order.

1. Cane-waving Heretic
2. Spell-weaving Heretic
3. 2x Wild-Eyed Swordsman
4. Spineless Heretic

After they are defeated, check on the sparkling Destination to complete the duty. There will be a cutscene. This one is important, so it is recommended to watch it either now or via the Unending Journey in an inn room.
