A guide to completing World 4-2 in Super Mario Bros 1 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Explore World 4-2

Go to the right and carefully jump over the gaps. If you're small, you can run under the low ceiling to go to the right. Otherwise, jump on top. You find three coins to the right, and if you hit the rightmost brick above where the coins were, a Mushroom or Flower will appear.

Go right and there are three Goombas, and if you're Super Mario or Fire Mario, you can hit the fifth brick from the right, then hit the one above that to get get some coins.

To the right, there are 7 ?-blocks. The middle block in the group of three on the right contains a Mushroom or Fire Flower.

There is a moving platform to the right. Use it to jump over the gap, then stand beneath the bricks to the right of the gap. You have a few different paths you can take at this point:

• Get on the ceiling to skip most of this level
• Climb a vine to skip to World 6 or 7 or 8
• Continue normally through this level

Option 1: Get on the Ceiling to Skip Most of this Level

Stand beneath the rightmost brick and jump straight up to reveal a hidden block. Then stand under the brick to the left of that, and jump straight up to reveal another hidden block. Then go to the right so you can jump on the rightmost hidden block you revealed. From there, you can jump up on the bricks above you, and then onto the ceiling, where you can run to the right, skipping most of this level. Skip to After the Moving Platforms to continue.

Option 2: Climb a Vine to Skip to World 6 or 7 or 8

Stand beneath the rightmost brick and jump straight up to reveal a hidden block. Then stand under the brick to the left of that, and jump straight up to reveal another hidden block. Then go to the right so you can jump on the rightmost hidden block you revealed, without allowing the leftmost brick to go off screen. Jump and hit the leftmost brick to make a vine appear. Keep in mind that if you climb the vine, you will have to warp to World 6-1, or World 7-1, or World 8-1. You won't get to complete the rest of World 4 and you won't get to go to World 5. If you're OK with that, then jump to the vine and climb up it. (If you're not OK with that and you haven't climbed up the vine yet but you're already on the vine, press right if you're on the left side of the vine, then press down to get off the vine, and from there you can do Option 1 (see above) or Option 3 (see below)).

Option 3: Continue Normally Through this Level

There are four hidden blocks between you and the bricks above you, one under each brick, and one to the left of the bricks. Jump to hit them if you wish.

Go to the right to find an area with several Piranha Plant pipes. There are some bricks to the left and right of the middle pipe. In the bricks on the left, the rightmost brick has coins in it. In the bricks on the right, the rightmost brick has a Starman in it, and there are Buzzy Beetles here, which are immune to fireballs but can be stomped. Also, the pipe to the right of the Starman brick leads to a secret area. If you don't want to go to the secret area, skip to the next paragraph. In the secret area, jump onto the brick on the right (which contains coins), then jump on the platform to the left, then jump left onto the ceiling, where you can try to jump left then fall right to enter the area with the coins.

If you skipped the secret area, go to the right and you find two Koopa Troopas, a Piranha Plant pipe, and an area with moving platforms and some brick platforms between them.

After the Moving Platforms

The set of bricks beneath the ceiling bricks has a Mushroom or Fire Flower in the middle brick.

To the right of the moving platforms is the pipe that you come out of if you went to the secret area.

There is a Koopa Troopa to the right, followed by two Piranha Plant pipes. Jump over the gap after the pipes, then be careful of the Buzzy Beetle that comes down the stairs on the right.

Beyond the stairs, there is a moving platform that you can ride up, and if you want to warp to World 5-1, you can jump on the ceiling and go right to reach the Warp Zone. Otherwise, go to the right, and hit the leftmost brick to make a Mushroom or Flower come out. Jump on top of the bricks and go to the right to get the coins on top.

Go to the right, where there are stairs leading up to a Piranha Plant pipe, with a Buzzy Beetle down below. Go past the pipe and enter the pipe on the right then go to the top of the stairs, and run and jump to the goal pole on the right to continue to World 4-3.
