This page lists how to get the different items you can find in Super Mario Bros 2, with an explanation of what each item does.

Items List

Item	How to Get	What it Does
Small Veggie	Pull up grass. Some grass gives you a small veggie when pulled.	Throw veggies at enemies to defeat them.
Large Veggie	Pull up grass. Some grass gives you a large veggie when pulled.	Throw large veggies at enemies to defeat them. In addition, the fifth large veggie that you pick will be a Stopwatch instead.
Stopwatch	Pull up five large veggies. The fifth one will be a Stopwatch instead.	When you get a Stopwatch, all enemies on the screen will be temporarily frozen in place.
Potion	Pull up grass. Some grass gives you a potion when pulled.	Drop the potion on the ground to make a door appear. Go through the door to reach Subspace, which is a dark mirrored version of the normal world, where all tufts of grass give Coins, and there are Mushrooms if you put the door in the right place. Any cherries in the normal world will also be available in Subspace, and collecting Subspace cherries won't make the normal world cherries disappear.

Coin	Pull up grass in Subspace, which you reach by dropping a Potion and going through the resulting door. You only get coins during the first two visits to Subspace in a level. Starting from the third visit to Subspace in a level, you will only get small veggies from the grass in Subspace.	After you successfully complete a level, each coin that you collected gives you a chance to play the Bonus Chance slot machine, which gives you one extra life if you match three non-cherry symbols, or five extra lives if you match three cherries, or one extra life if the first slot is a cherry, or two extra lives if the first and second slot are cherries.
Mushroom	Mushrooms can be found in specific locations in Subspace, which you reach by dropping a Potion and going through the resulting door.	Collecting a mushroom adds one mark to your life meter.
Heart	Every time you defeat eight enemies, a heart floats up from the bottom of the screen.	A heart restores one mark in your life meter.
1UP Mushroom	Pull up grass. Some grass gives you a 1UP Mushroom when pulled.	A 1UP Mushroom gives you one extra life.
Cherries	Cherries can be found floating in the air throughout each level.	Every time you collect five cherries, a Starman floats up from the bottom of the screen.
Starman	Collect five Cherries to make a Starman appear.	When you collect a Starman, you start flashing, and the background music changes. While you're flashing, you're invincible and will instantly defeat any enemies you come into contact with.
Bomb	Pull up grass. Some grass gives you a bomb when pulled.	When you pick up a bomb, it eventually starts flashing, then it explodes about 1.5 seconds later. The explosion will damage any enemies and break any broken blocks it hits (and it will damage you if you get hit by the blast).
POW Block	POW Blocks can sometimes be found on the ground in a level.	Pick up and drop the POW block to make the ground shake. Any enemies on the ground will be defeated by the shockwave.
Turtle Shell	Pull up grass. Some grass gives you a turtle shell when pulled.	Throw the Turtle Shell and it will slide along the ground, defeating any enemies it hits. You can jump on it and pick it up again to reuse it.
Key	Keys can sometimes be found on the ground in a level	Pick up and carry a key to a locked door, then stand in front of the locked door and press Up to unlock it. Beware of the Phanto mask that follows you around and tries to hit you when you're carrying the key. You can also throw a key at enemies to defeat them. If you drop a key some place you can't reach, you have to go back to where you got the key to get a replacement.
Crystal Ball	Sometimes the crystal ball is on the ground at the end of a level, and sometimes Birdo is holding onto the crystal ball. Defeat Birdo to get it.	Pick up the crystal ball to open the Hawk Mouth Gate at the end of the level, then go through the gate to complete the level.
Rocket	Pull up grass. Some grass gives you a rocket when pulled. Rockets are only found in specific locations.	The rocket will transport you to another part of the current level.
