After you completely upgrade your house such that you can't expand it anymore and have paid off all of your mortgages, you attain VIP status, and you become eligible to participate in the HHA Theme Challenges. These challenges require you to decorate your house with items from a specific theme (Antique, Fairytale, Hobby, Horror, Natural, Oriental, Science, and Stylish). If you get a large number of points, you win golden parts for your house (Golden Roof, Golden Walls, Golden Door, Golden Fence, Golden Mailbox).
How to Become Eligible for VIP Status and the Theme Challenges
Upgrade your house completely and pay off all of your mortgages. The next day, Lyle will be outside of your house and will tell you that you have attained VIP Status. As a VIP member, you can choose to participate in HHA Theme Challenges.
How to Start, End, and Change a Theme Challenge
To begin a theme challenge, simply talk to Lyle in Nook's Homes and ask to start a theme challenge. At any time, you can talk to him to end the challenge, or change the theme of the challenge.
How to Earn Points for the Challenge
You can earn (and lose) points for meeting certain criteria. The following sections explain the point requirements.
Life Necessities
Having all five of the basic necessity furniture (chair, drawers, dresser, table, and bed) in the same room gives you the following challenge points. Please see the series, sets, and themes page for a full list of furniture sets.

Interior Theme Bonus
Have at least 8 items total in your house. In addition, change the exterior of your house such that at least one aspect of the exterior (Roof, Door, Fence, Chimney, Siding, Mailbox) matches the theme for the challenge. This makes you eligible for the following bonuses. Note that outdoor tiles and the house style (western, modern, etc.) do not have a theme. The following conditions will cause you to lose points in the theme challenge:
